Elieser Slomovic

A Remembrance by David Band, January, 2006

I had classes with Elieser at the LA Hebrew High School and the University of Judaism, and while in high school I went to his home on Shabbat afternoon for a Talmud shiur. What stands out in my memory of learning with Elieser is the digressions. We would usually cover only a few lines of text, because one issue would lead to another (and occasionally an anecdote from his childhood would be thrown in). These non-linear lessons would often drive students crazy ("will this be on the test?"), but I appreciated the connections, and reveled in Elieser's immersion in, and love for, the totality of Rabbinic literature. And I knew that he really did split his existence between the 'real' world and his books. I remember him sitting in his customary seat in Beth Jacob, by the mechitsa (Tikva was on the other side), his head buried in a sefer; and after schul he would most likely comment on some interesting point he had just read.

Anyone who ate or studied at the Slomovic table knew of the great love between Elieser and Tikva, and enjoyed the comfortable and elegant atmosphere. There was usually a flow of family in and out of their household, each regarded and treated with warmth and love.

My wife and I visited Elieser and Tikva a couple of months ago during a visit back to LA. I am happy that I was able to tell him that one of my regrets as a parent is that my sons never had a teacher like Elieser.
